Dr. Brian Blackwood is a Trauma/Acute Care Surgeon as well as Surgical Intensivist at St. Anthony’s Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center in Lakewood, Colorado. He is board certified by The American Board of Surgery in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Blackwood has a particular interest in caring for the most critically ill trauma and surgery patients. He recognizes that a person’s life can change in an instant due to a trauma or surgical emergency and he takes great care in guiding those patients and their families through those tough times.

Dr. Blackwood was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  After high school he stayed in Baton Rouge where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry from Louisiana State University. He then went on to receive his Medical Doctorate from Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Following medical school, Dr. Blackwood moved to Chicago where he completed his General Surgery Residency at Rush University Medical Center and The John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. While in residency he also undertook a two year basic science research fellowship at Northwestern University and in 2015 he was awarded the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress Scientific Forum Excellence in Research Award for the Category of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Blackwood then went on to complete a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at The University of Colorado and Children’s Hospital Colorado.

When Dr. Blackwood is not in the hospital, he spends his time with his wife, Lisa, along with their two kids, Isla and Reid, and their English bulldog, Leo. A love for outdoor activities was one of the biggest reasons that Dr. Blackwood and his family decided to stay in Colorado. They spend most of their weekends taking family adventures and hikes in the mountains.
